What is a Century Farm?

The Tennessee Century Farms Program was created in 1975 by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture as part of our nation’s bicentennial celebration. The focus of the program is to recognize and document the families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years.

    The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Tramel will be preached the 3rd Sunday.
    Prof. J.H. McClellan's school opened last Monday with a large attendance at the Cave Springs school house with W.G. [Wm Grant] Tramel as assistant.
    Mrs. W.B. [Wm Barten] Tramel is no better at this time.

    W.B. Evans, Herschel and E.C. Bratten attended an ice cream party at the Bailiff [Elizabeth Bailiff, widow of Joab Bailiff / boarding house] house in Smithville.

    James Bates, who lived near New Hope, died last week.

    Old Timers - A brief notice of persons living in other states
    Col. R.D. Allison, McKinney, Texas, "the hero of three wars", and commander of Allison celebrated squadron during the late war went to Texas in 1866, has been three times to the Legislature. He has a competency but is not rich. Age is gaining on time somewhat. W.R. [Wm Rufus] Bailiff, Mrs. Susan Self, Isaac Overall, Smith Close and T.F. Everett left Tennessee for McKinney, Texas in 1882, 1859,1859, 1859, and 1880, respectively.

    H.H. Jones, Charlie Bailiff [son of Columbus A. Bailiff] and A.P. Smith represented the Baptist S.S. of this place at the convention at Smithville.

    Geo. Evans raised a barn 3 feet for TRJ [John Riley Tramel] Thursday with jackscrews.

    C.A. [Columbus A.] Bailiff was in town Sunday after a spell of sickness which was near fatal.
    W.J. Jones [Roxana Bailiff's son-in-law] was kicked on the leg last week by a mule.

    Smith Bros. are putting up J.R. [John Riley] Tramel a new barn. There is a small law suit pending here before Esq. J.R. [John Riley] Tramel.
    Mrs. Elizabeth Williams of Dowelltown returned Monday after a short visit here to her daughter, Mrs. Alice Tramel [wife of Dock Harrison Tramel].

    A telephone message to the family of Mr. C.A. [Columbus A.] Bailiff announced the death of Mr. Burrell Driver [possible brother-in-law of Columbus A. Bailiff] at Gallatin Sunday.

    Mr. J.M. [James Monroe] Bailiff and family are talking of moving near McMinnville this fall. [And, they did move for a time to the Gath community.]

    Misses Lelia Bailiff [daughter of James Thomas Bailiff & granddaughter of Joab Bailiff] and Della Drake have been visiting friends and relatives at this place for the last week.

    Mrs. C.A. [Mary Driver] Bailiff jumped out of the surrey Friday and sprained her ankle.

    Capling Shade Tramel and Harve Coggin went to Helton to call on their best girls.
    S.E. Tramel and Simon Taylor attended the camp meeting at Buffalo Valley.

    Enoch Rollins, while riding his bicycle Sunday ran against a horse ridden by Lum [Columbus Berry] Bailiff. Mr. Rollins was badly hurt receiving a deep cut on his cheek and was unconscious for some time. He was attended by Dr. Eaton who reports him much better this morning.

    Martinsbery, KY
    On the 18th ult. We set sail for a pearling expedition on Cumberland river, with eleven pearlers. Since then the crowd has decreased to seven. Four of the boys became homesick, to wit; C.H. [Columbus Hatton] Chapman, Lon [Alonzo Farmer] Bailiff, I.D. Herrington and Fate Cantrell. Thomas Parsley, I.D. [Issac D.] Cummings and Wm. Bailiff [Wm Monroe] have quit pearling and gone out to try their luck with the Kentucky belles. We hope they will be successful. [Lon Bailiff & Hatton Chapman were 1st cousins. Issac Cummings was to be the brother-in-law of Wm. & Lon Bailiff. He married their sister Nancy Bailiff.]

    Charlie Bailiff [son of Columbus A. Bailiff] has accepted a position with I.T. Allen of Hartsville. F.L. [Forrest Lee] Bailiff has returned from Phillipi.

    The Times drawing came off today under supervision of Capt. Baird, Charlie Wheeler and F.L. [Forrest Lee] Bailiff. Little Miss Willette Bell drawing the numbers. J.D. Sneed of Hall's Hill won first prize, second prize went to Miss Alice Yeargin.

    Pursuant to a decree rendered by the Hon. Circuit Court at its November term, 1986, I will offer for sale Monday, Feb 1, 1897, at the courthouse door … the undivided interest Robert Braswell has in a certain tract of land lying in the 4th civil district of DeKalb county, known as the Samuel Braswell lands and bounded as follows: North by Bailiff, South by Savage, East by Braswell and West by Braswell.     Mrs. W.A. [Wm Albert] Tramel most of last week visited the bedside of her mama, Mrs. E.M. Bailiff [Elizabeth Foutch], at her home in Smithville. She is reported dangerously ill.
    D.H. [Dock Harrison] Tramel lost a fine young mule to death a few days ago.
    Marvin Tramel of Liberty visited relatives in this neighborhood last week.
